More About the Project & Artist

As an immigrant myself, I am interested in the experiences of other immigrants. In addition, my grandparents owned and operated a laundry business in Taiwan. My grandfather immigrated from Mainland China to Taiwan as a young man. After he married my grandmother, they tried several businesses before finding success with their laundry shop. I spent summers with my grandparents and I remember my grandmother spending the evenings writing and sewing tags on each item of clothing that had come in that day, identifying their owners.

I, too, will write and sew tags on the shirts in The Laundry Maze. Each tag will tell the story of a change in professions, and will be an "identity tag" of a sort.
